The Day The Wind Died

No one said anything when the wind died.
It was thought best not to notice.

Then laughter drained out of hurting hearts.

It was as if every word ever spoken
had been written on the wind.

When a river bed runs dry,
no one cares how pure or free was the water.

The sun rose in the morning. No one noticed.

Lovers forgot why they loved
as the world around spun into chaos.

Children holding giant feathers
tried fanning the wind back to life.

Politicians formed movements called "Save The Wind"
to increase their glory.

An artist on a hill made a literal house of cards,
never fearing to be blown down.

Each dawn brought new horror.

Desperate elections were held voting the wind to begin anew.

In lives unlived, a heavy quiet settled over the world.

With a final whispering sigh,
the last of dreams escaped the sky.
